Are you making these IELTS mistakes?
Top 5 Mistakes IELTS Students Make—and How to Fix Them
Most students don’t realise these small errors can cost them big points. But the good news? You can fix them.
1. Memorizing answers
Examiners know when you’re not being natural. Instead, practice real conversation. Talk to a friend. Record yourself. Use your own ideas.
2. Not reading the question carefully
In the writing and speaking test, many students answer the wrong thing. Always underline keywords. Ask yourself: What is the question really asking?
3. Writing too much or too little
You need to follow the word limit. For Task 1, write at least 150 words. For Task 2, at least 250. But don’t write 400! More words = more mistakes.
4. Using big words incorrectly
Trying to sound “smart” often leads to strange sentences. Use clear, simple vocabulary. For example, say “many people” instead of “a plethora of individuals.”
5. Ignoring time management
Practice with a timer. If you run out of time during the test, your score will drop—even if your answers are good.
These mistakes are common, but you can overcome them with the right practice.
Which of these do you struggle with the most?
